A native of Ukraine, Oleksiy Zakharov is a freelance bassoonist in New York City. Mr. Zakharov has previously held positions of acting Associate Principal bassoon of Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as Second bassoon of Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra from 2009 to 2015. Mr. Zakharov has performed as a guest principal bassoonist with American Symphony, American Ballet Theatre, Apex Ensemble, Ensemble Signal, Columbus ProMusica, Beethoven Festival Orchestra, Albany, Princeton and Richmond Symphonies as well as Orchestra of St. Luke's. As a chamber musician, Mr. Zakharov has participated in Moab Festival, Bard Summerscape, Verbier, and often performs with Jupiter Chamber Players and Emerald City Music.In 2017 Mr. Zakharov joined the faculty of Mahanaim School of Music and has also previously taught as guest bassoon instructor at the Oberlin Conservatory, the Advanced Bassoon Institute @ Interlochen, and has served as guest judge for the concerto competition at Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music.While enjoying a freelance performing and teaching career in New York City, Mr. Zakharov is also a bassoon technician and specialist, and spends his free time servicing, restoring, and repairing old and modern instruments for bassoonists on the East Coast.Mr. Zakharov holds a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School and a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory where his primary teachers were Patricia Rogers, Whitney Crockett and George Sakakeeny.
