EXO's Music Director James Blachly is a conductor rapidly gaining a reputation for insightful and interactive programming. Last season saw debut performances with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, Boston Philharmonic New Directions, the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Odyssey Opera, and concerts with El Sistema in Venezuela, where he was invited as the only American on the 1st Annual International Young Conductors Festival. Last summer he made his debut with Geneva Light Opera, music directing Cosí fan tutte at the Smith Opera House; this season he has been reengaged to conduct Die Fledermaus.
In 2015-16, the Rite of Spring Dance Party was presented in partnership with Groupmuse in Boston and subsequently in Brooklyn at National Sawdust and the Masonic Temple in Fort Greene. EXO’s 2016-17 residence at the Muse Circus, where Blachly will conduct the complete Stravinsky early ballets, follows the success of the Symphonie fantastique collaboration with The Muse Circus which began in July, 2015.
While Zander Fellow with the Boston Philharmonic from 2013-15, Mr. Blachly initiated the Young Composers Initiative, a reading and recording the compositions of young composers from Harvard, NEC, Boston University, the Berklee School of Music, the Walden School, and the Boston Conservatory, conducted the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in concert, assisted Gil Rose with Odyssey Opera, and guest conducted the Discovery Ensemble among other Boston-based ensembles.
Mr. Blachly is a passionate advocate for music education and youth orchestras. He is the co-founder of Make Music NOLA, an El Sistema-inspired program in New Orleans, and has dedicated a portion of his endeavors to lecturing at corporations, institutes, and schools, helping to further his dedication to “help people listen.”
